Guest speaker from the film industry

Today we had a guest speaker come in from out of college to talk to us about the industry and also about cameras. His name was Gabs and has his own production company where he makes short film, adverts and music videos.

He started by showing us some of his adverts and telling us how he got the job offer and how he went about filming and setting up the for the shot. Saying about how he would assign people to certain jobs for each different shot and also how he would get a brief from the company or organization which he would have to apply to. This is good because of the fact that he have already got practice of this from our projects we have been given from our teacher.

When he was talking about cameras there was a number of topics he covered, one of these were lens. Saying there are two different types of lens, prime and zooms lens. Zoom lens being able to zoom in and out while the prime being fixed at a certain position. The prime lens are each different with each being more zoomed in or less. The zoom covers all of these, however at a lesser quality and also being cheaper.

The next thing he talked about was the f stop. This affected the lighting of a shot. The scale of the f stop could from 1.4 to 22. 1.4 being really open and letting a lot of light in the shot while having it at 22 makes very narrow and having it at very dark and not letting a lot of light in. It also changes the depth of field of the shot. With the higher the number on the f stop makes it have a much longer depth of field while lower has a much shallower depth of field.

The shutter speed is another thing that we learned from the speaker.  Saying that normally the shutter speed should be twice the number that your frame rate is at. For at 25 the shutter speed should be at 1/50. When the number getting bigger the shutter speed gets slower. This is due to the fact that the shutter speed is time for the shutter to closes every second. For example 1/50 means it closes 50 times in one sec.

The iso is also numbered based, meaning higher the number the more light the camera has in the shot, this also means the picture is more gainer. When you have the number lower you have the shot being less exposed to the light and while also getting a much better picture quality.

This is me – reflection on the group crit

In this blog post I will be talking about how my short film this is me got received from the group crit of the three people who filled out the forms telling me about the short film.

The first person who gave me feedback was Lee. One the of the good things he liked was that of the quote at the beginning of the short film. This shows me that I shouldn’t be so critical of the narration giving me the confidence to actual do it again if I have to in one of my future projects. He also liked the green screen, this is pleasing as this is the thing I spent the most amount of time on and having come out as good means that my effort wasn’t wasted. The last thing he wrote was that the mixing of genres was a good idea meaning that I had a good variety of films being shown.

The areas of development he only had one and that was to have each film on different cards. This doesn’t make any sense because I did do you that so he possibly might not have seen the different cards for the films. He mentioned that he could use the Bob Dylan influence for his short film and also include the use of green screen.

The next person who gave me feedback on my work was Stephan, saying that the green screen was very good. This means that even on my first attempt I have done it to a high standard. This will give me more confidence in future projects when working with this stuff. He also liked the music and the use of the interview. This shows that I was doing well with being creative in how I show my interview and not just having a straight forward someone asking me questions. For areas of development he mentioned that I should maybe tidy up the green screen a bit however he mentioned that he was just being “piety,” with that comment. However I do agree with him that I could of made an improvement on the green screen effect because sometimes you could see the blue coming through the films, but I think I did quite well considering how it looked the first time.

The final person who gave feedback of my short film was Johnny. The good things he mentioned was the way I used the green screen and had the films on the cards. This shows that I correct to go in this direction and it was also worth it to do several reshoots to get it right. He also liked the music choice, this evidence for me to use more Bob Dylan songs in future projects, as is it quite different different from everyone elses. For areas of development he didn’t mention anything. This is quite pleasing as it shows my short film was well received and he liked alot as he couldn’t find a fault in it.

Overall the feedback has been very positive, making me feel that I have done a good job with my work and that I should be proud of my this is me. This gives me some confidence that I should take more pride in my work and also not be so afraid to present my work to the rest of the class. It also tells me that I should take more risks as sometimes they pay off, for example with the green screen doing well and the keying framing working better than I would have expected.

This is me – evaluation

In this blog post I will be talking about my final cut of this is me and how I should improve my work in the future. Overall I am quite pleased with the finished product and I think its one of the better short films I have done in college and including the ones I have done outside of the college before I came to east surrey.

I based my idea of the music video Subterranean Homesick Blues, I used a canon 600d and used footage from my favourite films. I also used editing techniques such colour key out a colour and using green screen, with having to keyframe the videos so that they would move with the card. I also had to record my voice in premiere pro. I experimented with different cuts in the film such as jump cuts and and fades within the film.

In terms of applying to the brief I think I have done quite well with making sure every fits within the parameters. Due to the fact that I have only included one piece of music, this being the Bob Dylan song Subterranean Homesick blues. I also include one voiceover of me  reading a quote with the quote being typed showed on screen. I had the interview of Bob Dylan, I feel this quite a creative way to include an interview so I am not just interviewing me or a family member. I used the title of this is me in lowercase and had no photographs so I didn’t go over 5 maximum limit. However the only two things I didn’t do were that of being the duration not being two minutes exactly and only text to be used is the title and your name as credit. The reason I didn’t do the 2 minutes exactly was that of the fact that I didn’t draw it out any longer because of the fact that it would of felt unnatural, however I could easily do this I need to. The reason I used one more text in form of a subtitle as that of it being it has hard to hear the question the interviewer was asking and would meant people won’t understand Bob Dylan’s reaction to the question.

One of the ways I could improve my work is by including the voice over in a better way. For this task I had to include a voiceover somewhere in my project. This meant that I had to place the audio in somewhere in the short film even though it didn’t fit with the rhythm or the flow of the short film. So I had to place a quote I liked at the beginning of short film and voice over it and read the quote. I feel like to improve this I should more planning beforehand so I know exactly what direction I am going in to make a good short film.

Another improvement I would make to the short film is to have the a better background making more interesting rather than just my back garden. The idea I would have would be maybe doing in front of a cinema with cars going by making more visually pleasing. I would also do a different background for when it zooms back out because I feel that would look pretty look having two different backgrounds and having them change seamlessly. The reason for me doing the filming in my back garden was because of the fact that I was running out of time and had to get the filming done as it was my third attempt at filming this one shot.

I feel like next time what I should do to improve on these two things to have a more structured planning and organisation so I know exactly what my idea so I can get on with shooting and editing leaving me enough time with everything so incase I do have to reshoot I have enough time to do so. Not like what I did with This is me leaving me a week to shoot and edit all my work, considering that as well I had to learn new techniques, from scratch, such as keyframing and colour keying.

One of the things I feel that I did well was the opening sequence where I put my shoes and get the blue, the reason I feel this worked is because of the fact that it was edited well with jump cuts and also with the actual background I feel worked well rather than it just being silence or some song over it. I feel that I included the rule of thirds well with having the titles of this is me next to the book American Psycho which is one my favourite pieces of literature. I feel that this also expressed some of my interests visually rather than just narrating over footage saying that I like Bob Dylan and American Psycho.

Another part of the short film I feel I did well was that of the greenscreen effects with the cards and the films. I feel this went well because of the fact that you could hardly see any of the blue on the actual cards. This was added due to the fact that the key framing worked well with the films moving with the cards quite seamlessly. Making it look like I was actually holding the films. I thought I also did some good editing with how it zoomed in on the interview so you could hear what Bob Dylan was saying and then for it to zoom back out for me to drop the card and walk off screen.

Not just the effects and editing that worked well but I feel did a good job in showing a creative way what films I liked due to the fact that I was holding up cards of my favourite films. Having the Bob Dylan music playing I thought would be a good idea of showing that he is one of my favourite singers this with the fact that the whole idea of the video is based off one of his music videos as well shows that his music has had a massive influence over me in my personal life and work. Having the Bob Dylan interview I feel was important due to the fact that I like his opinion on things and also his personality as a person. I feel that this was a good way to show my views on the media and fame in general, without just saying it to the camera.

The techniques I learnt in this project were that of colour keying out a colour so that I can place another video behind. Learning how to keyframe so I could move images and also zoom in on videos and also zoom back out into a full frame. Camera techniques were that I tried experimenting with shallow depths of fields so that it is focused on objects close to the camera but making the background out of focus. I feel that this quite a good effect and looks professional and less amateurish. This is definitely something I will be using in the future short films and future projects.

Overall I feel that this has been my hardest project so far but also the one I have worked the most with it also coming out as the best one I have done. I feel this project has taught me a lot in how to plan, edit and also shoot my films. This will give me experience and better techniques to use in the future so I can better myself to make better short films in the future when continuing this course.

Reshooting for this is me

This is my first attempt at filming the cards and colour keying out the colour. However this didn’t go to plan because of the fact that I was in the shadow and I was bending the cards. This resulted in the cards having two different colours meaning that I couldn’t fully remove the colour leaving half of it there.

The second reshoot did also didn’t go to plan, this was due to the opposite effect of it being  too white making the card white and removing the colour of my hands and my surroundings. I then learnt that I should have some light but not too much so that it also removes all of my surroundings.

The final one is the one I would like to use in my short film as the final edit. This is because the card isn’t bent meaning there is no shadow and there is also no light shining directly on it making it so that the card is the only colour.Meaning there is no other colour removed in the frame.

A test for the green screen- this is me

I have done this test using the original video so I can get some practise of how the green screen is going to work and how I should plan my filming when doing it. This enables me to know what to do when starting my filming and what precautions to take while filming so I know how to make it look good. I have figured out to I need to have the cards either bigger or much close so you can probably see the films being show on the cards. I will also make sure to have the cards brightly coloured and have it not be the same colour to anything else on the screen so it won’t get rid of anything else when I colour key in post production.

This is me- have decided which idea I am choosing (2nd proposal)

I have chosen to go with the idea of filming my interests in my life such as films and music. This is because I was struggling to come up with ideas for the cayman islands due to the fact that it wouldn’t have any of my creative input, I would just be taking footage from youtube and interviewing my parents. This wouldn’t stretch me creatively so I have decided to go with my interests so I can have more freedom and also challenge myself with creating my short film.

An idea which I had for this would have me recreate the music video subterranean homesick blues and have me holding up coloured cards. I would then colour key the cards out and replace them with some of my favourite films. I feel that this would be a good way to show what are some of my favourite films but also who is my favourite singer. It will also be a challenge to make sure that it looks good and doesn’t come off cheesy, it will also make me learn more about key framing and green screens. Giving me more experience with editing on premiere pro.

I also want to recreate the opening titles from the film Don’t look back, which is about Bob Dylan touring in the UK. I feel that this will be a creative way to open the film and will also relate back to my theme of interests due to the fact that it is a film about Bob Dylan. I also feel that this going to be different from usual titles due to the fact that it doesn’t have a black screen  with titles words on top.

My proposal for this is me

Mind map of my initial ideas

The reason for me doing this is so that I can have this in my proposal and have some basic ideas of what I can do for my final short film. This will give me some guidance of what I could do for my short film. This also gives me many simplistic ideas that I can expand upon in later research and more development.

For my proposal I want to keep it more general due to the fact that I don’t have it one way and don’t have an answer yet for my idea and still have multiple in my head. This is why I am trying to keep this proposal more general and develop one idea more over Christmas and make that the idea I will use.

Primary research: What don’t you know about me?

I conducted a questionnaire asking my class mates’ questions about me and my project this is me. The reason I have done this is so I can have some primary research to use in my proposal and to also help me with ideas for this is me. I asked people what they would like to see in my short film this is me what they didn’t already know about me. This is the responses I got from doing my questionnaire.

Conor: Spare time
Ethan: House, bedroom
Finn: Aspect of film do I enjoy
Betsy: Music
Tammy: Fashion
Dan: Spare time
Max: Music

I feel that this good thing for me to do due to the fact that I have some more ideas from other people what things I can and include in my short film. I also feel that this good evidence of me taking the proper preparation before jumping into the filming and editing of my short film. I also feel this is good to include things that my class don’t know about me and will mean I will be doing something different and interesting. This is making sure that I am including things that people don’t already know about me and making it interesting for people to watch and different from other people’s.
